-(으)ㄹ 거예요 expresses a scheduled or confirmed plan.
Not just a wish, but a locked plan: you bought the ticket, made the appointment, or firmly resolved to do it. It pairs with specific time words like “tomorrow” (내일), “next week” (다음 주), or “at 3:00” (세 시에).
Step 1: Check for a final consonant (받침)
This single check determines everything.
Step 2: No 받침 → -ㄹ 거예요 / Has 받침 → -을 거예요
읽다: to read읽 · has ㄱ · 읽을 거예요
먹다: to eat먹 · has ㄱ · 먹을 거예요
살다: to live살 · ends in ㄹ · 살 거예요 (ㄹ stays as is)
I am meeting a friend at 10 tomorrow. / appointment made
I am going to watch films at home this weekend.
I am going to read fifty books this year.
I will eat lunch in front of the school.
I am going to live in Seoul from next month.
If the stem already ends in ㄹ, do not add 을.
Because ㄹ is already there, leave it as is.
When to use and when not to use
Use it: when the time is set, tickets are booked, or the plan is firm:
Don’t use it, when nothing is decided yet. Use -고 싶어요 instead.
Related patterns, -(으)려고 해요 means “planning/thinking of”, and -기로 했어요 means “decided on”. All three look ahead, but with different levels of firmness.
