Here is the part that makes Korean look hard and is actually the part that makes it easy.
Korean does not write letters in a line. It stacks each syllable into a square block. One block = one syllable, always.
The rule for where things go
It depends on the vowel:
Vertical (ㅏ ㅓ ㅣ)consonant left, vowel right · ㄱ + ㅏ = 가
Horizontal (ㅗ ㅜ ㅡ)consonant on top, vowel below · ㄱ + ㅗ = 고
That is why 가 and 고 use the same consonant but look so different. The letter did not change — the *shelf* did.
