Vowels are built from three pieces: a long line, and a short mark that can sit on either side of it.
A vertical line means the short mark goes left or right. A horizontal line means it goes above or below. That is the whole system.
ㅏ · aas in father. Mark on the right.
ㅓ · eoas in dull / but. Mark on the left.
ㅗ · oas in boat. Mark on top.
ㅜ · uas in boot. Mark below.
ㅡ · euNo English match. Lips flat and wide, like the last sound in “open” said with a straight mouth.
ㅣ · ias in machine.
ㅓ trips up English speakers. It is *not* “eo” as two sounds. It is one vowel, close to the “u” in but. Written “eo” only because the Roman alphabet ran out of letters.
