How to Build Nominal Forms: -기 vs -(으)ㅁ

Korean turns verbs and adjectives into nouns using two main endings:

1. -기 (Simple & Direct): Attach -기 directly to the verb stem without changing anything, whether there is a final consonant or not!
- 읽다 → 읽기 *(reading)*
- 쓰다 → 쓰기 *(writing)*
- 듣다 → 듣기 *(listening)*

2. -(으)ㅁ (Creates Concrete & Established Nouns):
- Vowel ending: attach -ㅁ (자다 → 잠 *sleep*, 꿈을 꾸다 → 꿈 *dream*)
- Consonant ending: attach -음 (믿다 → 믿음 *faith/trust*, 웃다 → 웃음 *laughter*)
- ㄹ batchim: attach -ㅁ under ㄹ (살다 → 삶 *life*)
- ㅂ irregular: 돕다 → 도움 *help*
