Formal Endings and The ㄹ-Drop Rule

In formal style (-ㅂ/습니다), the rule looks simple at first:
- Vowel stem → -ㅂ니다 / -ㅂ니까? *(가다 → 갑니다)*
- Consonant stem → -습니다 / -습니까? *(먹다 → 먹습니다)*

The Big Trap: ㄹ-Stems!
When a verb stem ends in ㄹ, the ㄹ drops completely, and the verb takes -ㅂ니다 (not -습니다!):
- 살다 (to live) → 살 drops ㄹ → 사 + ㅂ니다 = 삽니다
- 만들다 (to make) → 만들 drops ㄹ → 만듭니다
- 알다 (to know) → 알 drops ㄹ → 압니다

Meanwhile, verbs with ㅂ, ㄷ, or ㅅ (like 듣다, 덥다, 낫다) stay completely regular before -습니다: 듣습니다, 덥습니다, 낫습니다!
