열쇠 하나였다 — -(으)ㄴ / -는 / -(으)ㄹ · 8분
Take a deep breath and look back at your journey from Stage 2 through Stage 5. You learned so many essential Korean expressions:
- -(으)ㄹ 거예요 *(Future: I will do)*
- -(으)ㄹ 때 *(Time: When I do)*
- -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 *(Ability: I can do)*
- -(으)ㄹ까요 *(Question / Suggestion: Shall we?)*
- -(으)ㄹ게요 *(Promise / Intention: I will)*
- -(으)ㄴ 후에 *(Sequence: After doing)*
- -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다 *(Experience: I have done)*
- -는 것 같다 *(Conjecture: It seems like)*
Did it feel like Korean was an endless sea of separate, complicated endings to memorize? Prepare to see the entire language in a completely new light.
때 is literally a noun meaning “time / moment”.수 is a noun meaning “way / ability / means”.후(後) is a noun meaning “after / following”.적 is a noun meaning “past instance / occasion”.것 is a noun meaning “thing / fact / appearance” (and 거예요 is just 것이에요 spoken quickly!).Look at that table again. Everything connects!
- When you said *“갈 거예요”*, you were literally saying [to go + thing + is].
- When you said *“먹을 때”*, you were saying [to eat + time].
- When you said *“한국에 간 적이 있어요”*, you were saying [to Korea + gone + occasion + exists].
Korean isn’t a chaotic web of random endings. It is a breathtakingly logical set of LEGO blocks built on the noun-modifying system!
