Be careful not to confuse 르-irregular verbs with verbs that simply end in ㅡ:
- 르 verbs (모르다, 빠르다): Drop ㅡ AND add an extra ㄹ → 몰라요, 빨라요. - Regular ㅡ verbs (쓰다, 끄다, 크다, 아프다): Just drop ㅡ, no extra ㄹ → 써요, 꺼요, 커요, 아파요. - Exception to know: 따르다 (to follow / to pour) follows the simple ㅡ drop: 따라요 (not 딸라요)!
아프다Plain ㅡ drop · 아파요 · Drops ㅡ only, no extra consonant
끄다Plain ㅡ drop · 꺼요 · Drops ㅡ only (ㄲ + 어요)
Look at 아프다! It ends in ㅡ, but the letter before it is ㅍ, not ㄹ. So it is just a plain ㅡ drop: 머리가 아파요 (not 머리가 알파요).
I turn off the light in the room. (끄다 is plain ㅡ drop → 꺼요)
My throat hurts from a cold. (아프다 is plain ㅡ drop → 아파요)
Water and oil are different from each other.
