When a 르 verb meets -아/어 (like in -아요 / -어요 or -았/었어요), two things happen:
1. Drop ㅡ and add a ㄹ under the preceding syllable. 2. Look at the preceding syllable's vowel to pick the ending: - ㅏ or ㅗ: add -라요 (빠르다 → 빨라요, 모르다 → 몰라요). - Any other vowel: add -러요 (부르다 → 불러요, 누르다 → 눌러요, 기르다 → 길러요).
빠르다 (to be fast)ㅏ · -라요 · 빨라요 · is fast
모르다 (to not know)ㅗ · -라요 · 몰라요 · don't know
부르다 (to sing / call)ㅜ · -러요 · 불러요 · sings / calls
누르다 (to press)ㅜ · -러요 · 눌러요 · presses
고르다 (to choose)ㅗ · -라요 · 골라요 · chooses
Remember: before a consonant suffix like -고 (and) or -지만 (but), the verb is completely regular: - 빠르고 (빠르 + 고) - 모르지만 (모르 + 지만)
친구들과 노래를 불러요.I sing songs with my friends. (부르다 (ㅜ) → 불러요)
버튼을 눌러요.I press the button. (누르다 (ㅜ) → 눌러요)
가게에서 과일을 골라요.I choose fruit at the shop. (고르다 (ㅗ) → 골라요)
