Regular vs. Irregular: Telling Them Apart
Not every verb with ㄷ or ㅂ is irregular! Some common verbs follow regular rules:
- Regular ㄷ: 닫다 → 닫아요 (not 달아요), 받다 → 받아요 (not 발아요)
- Regular ㅂ: 입다 → 입어요 (not 이워요), 잡다 → 잡아요 (not 자워요)
Learning the handful of regular ones keeps you from over-applying the rule!
듣다ㄷ · Irregular (ㄷ→ㄹ) · 들어요 · to listen
닫다ㄷ · Regular (keeps ㄷ) · 닫아요 · to close
받다ㄷ · Regular (keeps ㄷ) · 받아요 · to receive
춥다ㅂ · Irregular (ㅂ→우) · 추워요 · to be cold
입다ㅂ · Regular (keeps ㅂ) · 입어요 · to wear (clothes)
Common trap: 닫다 (to close) and 달다 (to be sweet). If you change 닫다 into *달아요, it sounds like you are saying the door is sweet! Keep 닫다 regular: 문을 닫아요.
바람이 불어서 창문을 닫아요.Because wind is blowing, I close the window. (닫다 is regular → 닫아요)
생일 선물을 받아요.I receive a birthday gift. (받다 is regular → 받아요)
따뜻한 코트를 입어요.I wear a warm coat. (입다 is regular → 입어요)
