The ㄷ Irregular: ㄷ Changes to ㄹ
When certain verbs ending in ㄷ 받침 meet a suffix starting with a vowel (like -아요 / -어요), the ㄷ softens into ㄹ.
- 듣다 (to listen) → 들어요
- 걷다 (to walk) → 걸어요
- 묻다 (to ask) → 물어요
듣다듣 · 듣 + 어요 → 들 + 어요 · 들어요 · to listen / hear
걷다걷 · 걷 + 어요 → 걸 + 어요 · 걸어요 · to walk
묻다묻 · 묻 + 어요 → 물 + 어요 · 물어요 · to ask
Notice that this change only happens before vowels! Before consonants (like -고, -지만), the ㄷ stays:
- 듣고 (듣다 + 고)
- 걷지만 (걷다 + 지만)
이어폰으로 음악을 들어요.I listen to music with earphones. (듣다 → 들어요)
아침마다 공원을 걸어요.I walk in the park every morning. (걷다 → 걸어요)
모르는 길을 물어요.I ask for directions I don’t know. (묻다 → 물어요)
