Verbs/adjectives with no batchimstem + -셨어요 (가다→가셨어요, 오다→오셨어요, 바쁘다→바쁘셨어요)
Verbs/adjectives with a batchimstem + -으셨어요 (앉다→앉으셨어요, 읽다→읽으셨어요)
Stems ending in ㄹㄹ drops, then + -셨어요 (살다→사셨어요, 만들다→만드셨어요)
Words that already change completely also take the past this way드시다→드셨어요, 계시다→계셨어요, 주무시다→주무셨어요, 편찮으시다→편찮으셨어요
What this expression does
-(으)셨어요 is the past tense of -(으)세요. Use it when something the honored person did already happened.
할머니께서 어제 집에 가세요. (✕ — sounds like something happening now)
할머니께서 어제 집에 가셨어요. (○ — something that happened yesterday)
How to build it — just swap 세요 for 셨어요
The rule for building -(으)세요 stays the same — you only swap the final 세요 for 셨어요.
가세요 → 가셨어요
앉으세요 → 앉으셨어요
드세요 → 드셨어요 (드시다 changes the same way)
가다 — to go가셨어요
읽다 — to read읽으셨어요
살다 — to live사셨어요
드시다 — to eat (hon.)드셨어요
편찮으시다 — to be sick (hon.)편찮으셨어요
할머니께서 어제 병원에 가셨어요.Grandma went to the hospital yesterday.
할아버지께서 아까 진지를 드셨어요.Grandpa ate a meal a while ago.
선생님께서 지난주에 편찮으셨어요.The teacher was sick last week.
Mixing up 세요 and 셨어요 changes the tense. If there’s a word for a past time like “yesterday,” “a while ago,” or “last week,” it must be 셨어요.
어제 오세요. (✕ — sounds like a command to come now, even though it says “yesterday”)
