Let's review the 3 steps to pick between -아요, -어요, and 해요:
1. Is it a 하다 verb? → Always becomes 해요. 2. Look at the last vowel of the stem: - ㅏ or ㅗ → -아요 - Any other vowel (ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅡ, ㅣ, ㅐ, ㅔ) → -어요 3. Check if the vowels contract when there is no batchim.
살다 (to live)ㅏ · -아요 · 살아요
열다 (to open)ㅓ · -어요 · 열어요
일하다 (to work)하다 · 해요 · 일해요
작다 (to be small)ㅏ · -아요 · 작아요
적다 (to be few)ㅓ · -어요 · 적어요
Look closely at 살다 vs 열다 and 작다 vs 적다! One vowel difference changes whether you attach -아요 or -어요.
서울에 살아요.I live in Seoul. / 살다 has vowel ㅏ → 살아요
창문을 열어요.I open the window. / 열다 has vowel ㅓ → 열어요
회사에서 일해요.I work at the company. / 일하다 is a -하다 verb → 일해요
