How Vowels Merge Without a Final Consonant
When a verb stem has no final consonant (받침), the vowel of the stem merges with the ending -아요 / -어요.
Here are the most common contraction patterns in everyday speech.
ㅏ (no 받침)가 + 아요 · 가요 · 가다 → 가요 (to go)
ㅗ (no 받침)보 + 아요 · 봐요 · 보다 → 봐요 (to see)
ㅡ (no 받침)쓰 + 어요 · 써요 · 쓰다 → 써요 (to write)
Remember: stems with a final consonant (받침) do not contract! For example: 먹다 → 먹어요 (not 머요), 앉다 → 앉아요 (not 안자요 in spelling).
지금 커피를 마셔요.I drink coffee now.
텔레비전을 봐요.I watch television.
I write a letter in Korean.
