3강. -지요(-죠): 이미 아는 걸 확인하기

반응 -네요 · -군요 · -지요 · 8분

In Lessons 1 and 2, you learned -네요 (sensory surprise) and -군요 (new realization).

What if you already know the fact, and you simply want to confirm it with the listener or seek their agreement (*“Right?”, “Isn’t it?”, “You know, don’t you?”*)?

That is the realm of -지요 (contracted into -죠 in speech)!

- Walking in pleasant sunshine together: *“오늘 날씨 참 좋?”* *(The weather is really nice today, right?)*
- Checking tomorrow’s schedule: *“내일 회의 2시지요?”* *(Tomorrow’s meeting is at 2 PM, right?)*
- Answering in agreement: *“네, 그렇지요!”* *(Yes, exactly / of course!)*

-네요Direct Exclamation · Experiencing something in real time · 오늘 날씨가 참 춥네요! (Brr, so cold!)
-군요New Realization · Learning info or discovering a fact · 서울이 영하 10도군요. (Ah, so it’s -10°C.)
-지요 (-죠)Confirmation / Agreement · Believing listener already agrees · 오늘 날씨 참 춥죠? (It’s cold, isn’t it?)
Everyday Contraction: -지요 → -죠

In spoken Korean, -지요 is almost always contracted to -죠:

- *좋지요? → 좋죠?*
- *맞지요? → 맞죠?* *(That’s right, isn’t it?)*
- *맛있지요? → 맛있죠?*
- *그렇지요? → 그렇죠?*

Both forms are completely polite and natural!
오늘 날씨가 정말 좋지요?The weather is so nice today, isn’t it? (Seeking agreement)
한국어 공부 재미있죠?Studying Korean is fun, right? (Expecting agreement)
네, 맞아요. 그렇습니다.Yes, that’s right. (Affirmative confirmation)
