Putting Honorifics and Humble Forms into Practice
In Korean culture, showing respect to elders (parents, grandparents, teachers, bosses) requires harmonizing the whole sentence:
1. The Elder as Subject: Use 께서 + honorific verb (-(으)시- or special words like 주무시다, 드시다).
- 할아버지께서 지금 거실에서 주무세요.
2. The Elder as Receiver: Use 께 + humble verb (드리다, 모시다).
- 어머니께 선물을 드렸어요.
- 할머니를 병원에 모시고 갔어요.
3. Yourself (The Speaker): Lower yourself using 저 / 제가 (never 나 / 내가) when speaking to or about elders!
주다 (to give)주시다 (Elder gives to me) · 드리다 (I give to elder)
데려가다 (to take someone) / · 모시다 / 모시고 가다 (I take elder)
말 (words / speech)말씀 (Elder's words) · 말씀 / 말씀드리다 (I say to elder)
물어보다 (to ask)물어보시다 (Elder asks) · 여쭤보다 (I ask elder)
할머니께서 진지를 맛있게 드셨어요.Grandmother had her meal deliciously. (Full honorific)
어머니 생신이라서 선물을 사 드렸어요.Because it was mother's birthday, I bought and gave her a gift. (Humble 드리다)
제가 선생님께 질문을 여쭤보았어요.I asked the teacher a question. (Humble 여쭤보다)
