1강. 자연스러운 원인과 결과: -아/어서
이유의 두 갈래: -아/어서 vs -(으)니까 · 7분
When explaining a natural reason like *“I was hungry, so I ate”* or *“It rained, so the ground is wet”*, Korean uses -아/어서.
The vowel harmony rule is the same one you know from -아요/-어요:
- Stem ends in ㅏ, ㅗ → -아서
- Other vowels → -어서
- 하다 verbs → 해서
배고프다 (hungry)배고파서 · Because I was hungry...
비가 오다 (to rain)비가 와서 · Because it rained...
늦다 (to be late)늦어서 · Because I was late...
바쁘다 (busy)바빠서 · Because I was busy...
공부하다 (to study)공부해서 · Because I studied...
CRITICAL RULE: Never conjugate past tense before -아/어서!
❌ 어제 비가 왔어서...
⭕ 어제 비가 와서...
The past tense is already conveyed at the end of the sentence: *어제 비가 와서 집에 있었어요.*
배가 고파서 밥을 먹었어요.I was hungry, so I ate food.
비가 와서 집에 있었어요.It rained, so I stayed home.
감기에 걸려서 병원에 갔어요.I caught a cold, so I went to the hospital.
