No Stem Changes Needed!
-고 있다 is one of the easiest grammatical patterns in Korean because the verb stem never changes.
Whether the stem ends in a vowel or a consonant, has 받침 or irregular letters (like ㄷ or ㅂ), you simply drop -다 and attach -고 있어요 directly!
가다 (to go)Vowel (ㅏ) · 가 + 고 있어요 · 가고 있어요 · am going
만들다 (to make)ㄹ batchim · 만들 + 고 있어요 · 만들고 있어요 · am making
일하다 (to work)-하다 verb · 일하 + 고 있어요 · 일하고 있어요 · am working
Look at 듣다! In -아요/-어요, 듣 becomes 들어요 (irregular change). But with -고 있다, the consonant doesn't meet a vowel, so it stays 듣고 있어요 (never 들고 있어요).
I am listening to music right now.
I am cooking in the kitchen.
I am making a gift to send to my friend.
