English needs a separate word — *I am a student*. Korean does not. The ending goes onto the noun itself.
저는 학생이에요. — I am a student.
Which ending? Look at the last letter of the noun
If the noun ends in a consonant (a 받침), use -이에요. If it ends in a vowel, use -예요.
학생consonant ㅇ · 학생이에요
선생님consonant ㅁ · 선생님이에요
의사vowel ㅏ · 의사예요
가수vowel ㅜ · 가수예요
You will meet this shape again and again: the form with the extra 이 goes after a consonant. 이에요/예요 · 이/가 · 은/는 · 을/를 all split the same way. Get the feel once here and the rest come almost free.
저는 한국 사람이에요.I am Korean. 사람 ends in ㅁ, a consonant → 이에요
제 친구는 의사예요.My friend is a doctor. 의사 ends in ㅏ, a vowel → 예요
이거는 커피예요.This is coffee.
