Which age do Koreans use?
Since 28 June 2023, Korean law and government documents use the international age (만 나이) — the same age as in most countries. You will still hear the other two:
- 연 나이 (year age) — this year minus your birth year. A few laws still use it, such as the rules on buying alcohol and tobacco and on military service.
- 세는 나이 (counting age) — the traditional way: everyone is 1 at birth and gets a year older on New Year's Day. Older people may still ask it this way.
How to say your age
In conversation Koreans count age with native Korean numbers and 살: 스물다섯 살 (25). In formal writing they use Sino-Korean numbers and 세: 25세 (이십오 세).
