한국어로 읽기 →Travelling in Korea without speaking Korean can feel intimidating, but you do not need hundreds of grammar rules to get around comfortably. In fact, most traditional phrasebooks fail because they hand you long, literary sentences that are awkward to say under pressure.
Instead, we organized 43 essential phrases into 7 real-life situations and broke each one into 3 difficulty tiers so you always have the right phrase ready.
The 3-Tier Approach: Speak at your own comfort level
- Tier 1: Easy (Keywords) — Single words or ultra-short phrases. If you freeze up, just saying the keyword with a questioning tone gets your point across immediately.
- Tier 2: Standard (Polite 해요체) — The universal sweet spot. Polite, friendly, and respectful. Use this in 95% of everyday interactions with store clerks, hotel staff, and taxi drivers.
- Tier 3: Accurate (Formal & Polite) — Complete, idiomatic sentences with proper honorific particles. Perfect when you want to sound polished or when filling out official forms.
1. Airport & Arrival (공항 & 입국)
Right after landing at Incheon or Gimpo, you need your passport, luggage, a transit card or SIM card, and local currency.
2. Transit & Directions (교통 & 길 찾기)
The Seoul subway and bus system is world-class, but knowing how to ask for an exit or top up your T-money card saves precious vacation time.
3. Dining & Cafe (식당 & 카페)
Food is the highlight of any trip to Korea. These four phrases cover almost every meal:
- Calling staff: 「저기요!」(Excuse me!) — Raise your hand slightly and say this clearly.
- Ordering: 「이거 하나 주세요」(One of this, please).
- Controlling spice: 「안 맵게 해주세요」(Please make it not spicy) or 「덜 맵게 해주세요」(Less spicy, please).
- Side dish refill: 「반찬 더 주세요」(More side dishes, please — standard side dishes in Korea are free to refill!).
- Bill: 「계산해 주세요」(Bill, please).
