Answering is where beginners freeze. These four get you through it.
네 · neYes. Also used as “uh-huh” to show you are listening.
아니요 · a-ni-yoNo.
조금 · jo-geuma little
몰라요 · mol-la-yoI do not know.
The sentence that buys you patience
한국어 조금 해요 — “I speak a little Korean.”
Say this early in a conversation and people slow down for you. It works far better than apologising.
네 is not only “yes”. Koreans say it constantly during a conversation to mean “I am with you”. If someone 네-네-네s while you talk, they are not agreeing to anything — they are listening.
