Mastering Comparison & Exclusive Scope
In this course, you learned three powerful particles that compare things or set strict limits:
1. -보다 (Comparison - Than): Attached to the standard of comparison.
- 비행기가 기차보다 빨라요. *(Airplanes are faster than trains.)*
2. -처럼 / -같이 (Simile - Like/As): Attached to something you resemble or do alike.
- 영화배우처럼 멋있어요. *(Cool like a movie actor.)*
3. -밖에 (Exclusive Limit - Nothing But): MUST be followed by a negative predicate (없어요, 몰라요, 안 먹어요).
- 지갑에 천 원밖에 없어요. *(I have nothing but 1,000 won.)*
-보다Than (comparison standard) · Attach to what is being compared against · 어제보다 오늘이 더워요
-처럼 / -같이Like / As (similarity) · Attach directly to nouns; interchangeable · 가수처럼 노래를 잘해요
-밖에Only / Nothing but · Always followed by NEGATIVE predicate · 시간이 10분밖에 없어요
오늘은 어제보다 날씨가 훨씬 따뜻해요.Today the weather is much warmer than yesterday. (어제보다 than yesterday)
선생님은 천사처럼 마음이 따뜻하세요.The teacher is warm-hearted like an angel. (천사처럼 like an angel)
아침에 바빠서 사과 반 개밖에 못 먹었어요.I was busy in the morning, so I could only eat half an apple. (반 개밖에 못 먹었어요)
