In English, we use words like *“than”* and *“like / as”* to make comparisons. In Korean, two key particles handle these comparisons, but they operate in completely different ways:
1. 보다 (“Than...”) — Degree Comparison:
- Compares measure, speed, size, or quality along a scale (*more / less*).
- Often paired with 더 (*more*):
- *“비행기가 기차보다 더 빨라요.”* *(Airplanes are faster than trains.)*
- *“형이 저보다 키가 커요.”* *(My older brother is taller than me.)*
- *“어제보다 오늘이 더 따뜻해요.”* *(Today is warmer than yesterday.)*
2. 처럼 (“Like / As...”) — Similitude & Manner Comparison:
- Compares resemblance, appearance, or manner (*like an angel, like a Korean speaker*).
- Very similar in meaning to 같이 (*like*):
- *“천사처럼 착해요.”* *(Kind like an angel.)*
- *“한국 사람처럼 한국어를 잘해요.”* *(Speaks Korean like a Korean person.)*
