1강. "앉으세요"의 진짜 정체: -(으)시-

Remember back in Stage 4 (bg-17) when you learned -(으)세요? We noticed that while it is often used as a polite request (*“Please sit down”*), it also appears in statements like *“선생님이 가세요”* (*The teacher is going*).

Here is the secret you have been waiting for:

-(으)세요 is actually made of two distinct parts:
-(으)시- *(honorific infix honoring the subject)* + -어요 *(conversational polite ending)*!

- *가- + -시- + -어요 → 가셔요 → 가세요*
- *앉- + -으시- + -어요 → 앉으셔요 → 앉으세요*

When do you attach -(으)시-?

Whenever the SUBJECT of the sentence (the person performing the action) is someone you honor or respect:
- Grandparents, parents, teachers, bosses, older relatives, customers, and guests.

Golden Rule: You NEVER use -(으)시- on yourself! (*“제가 가세요”* ❌)

가다 (to go)No batchim · 가세요 · 가십니다 · 선생님이 학교에 가세요.

오다 (to come)No batchim · 오세요 · 오십니다 · 할머니가 집에 오세요.

읽다 (to read)With batchim · 읽으세요 · 읽으십니다 · 어머니가 신문을 읽으세요.

Notice how in the formal register (-ㅂ/습니다), -(으)시- neatly snaps in: -(으)시- + -ㅂ니다 → -(으)십니다 (question: -(으)십니까?).

- *“사장님이 지금 회의를 하십니다.”* (The CEO is in a meeting right now.)

선생님이 교실에 오세요.The teacher comes into the classroom.

어머니가 책을 읽으세요.Mother is reading a book.

사장님이 지금 회의를 하십니다.The CEO is conducting a meeting right now. (Formal)
