To ask someone to do something for you politely, attach -아/어 주세요 to the verb. Because it starts with -아/어, stem vowel rules and irregulars follow the same familiar patterns as -아요/-어요!
- ㅏ / ㅗ vowels: attach -아 주세요 (닫다 → 닫아 주세요, 보다 → 봐 주세요). - Other vowels: attach -어 주세요 (읽다 → 읽어 주세요, 쓰다 → 써 주세요). - 하다 verbs: become -해 주세요 (말하다 → 말해 주세요). - ㄷ irregular: ㄷ changes to ㄹ (듣다 → 들어 주세요). - ㅂ irregular: ㅂ changes to 우 (돕다 → 도와주세요).
돕다 (ㅂ irregular)도와요 · 도와주세요 · Please help me
듣다 (ㄷ irregular)들어요 · 들어 주세요 · Please listen to me
부르다 (르 irregular)불러요 · 불러 주세요 · Please call (a taxi / my name)
만들다 (ㄹ stem)만들어요 · 만들어 주세요 · Please make it for me
열다 (to open)열어요 · 열어 주세요 · Please open (the door)
도와주세요 is one compound word (no space) meaning “Please help!”, whereas most other verbs keep a space: 열어 주세요, 들어 주세요.
선생님, 택시 좀 불러 주세요.Teacher, please call a taxi for me. (부르다 → 불러 주세요)
제 이야기를 끝까지 들어 주세요.Please listen to my story until the end. (듣다 → 들어 주세요)
너무 무거운데 저 좀 도와주세요.This is so heavy, please help me. (돕다 → 도와주세요)
