When you want to tell someone politely *“Please do this”*, attach -(으)세요 to the verb stem: - Stem without batchim → -세요 *(가다 → 가세요)* - Stem with batchim → -으세요 *(앉다 → 앉으세요)*
Remember the ㄹ rule from Stage 3? Stems ending in ㄹ drop the ㄹ: 만들다 → 만드세요, 살다 → 사세요!
The Two Faces of -(으)세요:
Most textbooks only teach this as a command, but in real Korean it has a second huge job:
1. Polite command: 여기 앉으세요. *(Please sit here.)* 2. Honorific statement or question: Describing what a respected elder or teacher does! - 선생님, 어디 가세요? *(Teacher, where are you going? — Not a command, just a respectful question!)* - 아버지는 지금 책을 읽으세요. *(Father is reading a book.)*
가다 (to go)가세요 · Please go / Where are you going?
앉다 (to sit)앉으세요 · Please sit down
읽다 (to read)읽으세요 · Please read / (Elder) reads
만들다 (ㄹ drop)만드세요 · Please make / (Elder) makes
