Let's review when to use each of these three essential sentence linkers:
- -(으)면 (If / When): Sets up a condition or assumption. (시간이 있으면 만나요 / If you have time, let's meet). - -(으)면서 (While): Describes two actions done at the same time by the same person. (음악을 들으면서 공부해요 / I study while listening to music). - -거나 (Or): Chooses between two alternative actions or states. (영화를 보거나 책을 읽어요 / I watch a movie or read a book).
-(으)면If / When · Vowel/ㄹ: -면, Consonant: -으면 · 비가 오면 집에 있어요
-(으)면서While · Vowel/ㄹ: -면서, Consonant: -으면서 · 차를 마시면서 이야기해요
-거나Or · Direct attachment to all stems · 음악을 듣거나 운동해요
Special stem reminder: ㄹ stems do NOT take 으! 살다 → 살면 / 살면서. 만들다 → 만들면 / 만들면서. But ㄷ irregulars turn ㄷ into ㄹ before 으: 듣다 → 들으면 / 들으면서!
주말에 시간이 있으면 같이 밥 먹어요.If you have time this weekend, let’s eat together. (-(으)면 condition)
밥을 먹으면서 텔레비전을 봐요.I watch TV while eating a meal. (-(으)면서 simultaneous actions)
주말에는 보통 집에서 쉬거나 영화를 봐요.On weekends I usually rest at home or watch a movie. (-거나 choice)
