Why Social Greetings and Apologies Only Use -
In Korean, social conventions strictly require -아/어서 for greetings, apologies, and thanks:
(Sorry for being late).
(Thank you for helping). *Never* 도와주시니까!
(Nice to meet you).
Use -(으)니까 when you give a reason to suggest an action, make a request, or give a command (e.g., "Since it's raining, let's take an umbrella").
(X) · Sorry for being late
(X) · Thanks for helping me
(X) · Nice to meet you
(X) · It’s raining, so use an umbrella
Rule of thumb: If you are saying thank you, sorry, or pleased to meet you, always reach for -아/어서 without hesitation!
I am truly sorry for being late to the appointment. (-어서 for apology)
Thank you sincerely for helping me. (-어서 for thanks)
Since the roads are blocked right now, let’s take the subway. (-(으)니까 before suggestion)
