- Ask: “Who is doing the action or being discussed?” → Use 은/는 (e.g., 저는, 친구는). - Ask: “What is being eaten, bought, read, or watched?” → Use 을/를 (e.g., 밥을, 책을).
If you swap them, the sentence turns upside down!
Who is doing it?은 / 는 · Topic (who we talk about) · 민수는 책을 읽어요.
What is acted on?을 / 를 · Direct Object (thing received) · 민수는 책을 읽어요.
What is being contrasted?은 / 는 (on object) · Contrast / Special focus · 커피는 마셔요. 차는 안 마셔요.
Notice that 은/는 can replace 을/를 when making a contrast! When you say “사과는 좋아해요”, it means: *Apples, I like (but something else, I might not)*.
