Beginners often get confused by what comes *in front of* the ending:
1. 이에요 / 예요 attaches directly to the noun without any particle: 학생이에요 (I am a student, NO particle!)
2. 아니에요 requires the subject particle 이/가: 학생이 아니에요 (I am not a student).
Never say *학생 안 이에요* or *학생을 아니에요*!
학생 (student)학생이에요 · 학생이 아니에요
의사 (doctor)의사예요 · 의사가 아니에요
물 (water)물이에요 · 물이 아니에요
커피 (coffee)커피예요 · 커피가 아니에요
Remember: 이에요/예요 is a suffix glued to the noun. 아니에요 is an independent adjective word meaning 'to not be', which is why the noun before it needs the subject marker 이/가.
이거는 물이에요. 술이 아니에요.This is water. It is not alcohol. (물 + 이에요 / 술 + 이 아니에요)
저는 선생님이 아니에요. 학생이에요.I am not a teacher. I am a student. (선생님 + 이 아니에요 / 학생 + 이에요)
제 가방이 아니에요. 친구 가방이에요.It's not my bag. It's my friend's bag.
