Identity (to be / not to be) vs Existence & Possession (to exist / not to exist, have / not have). 신분·정체 표현(이다/아니다)과 존재·소유 표현(있다/없다) 완벽 구분
| Word | Core meaning | Particle needed on noun | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 이다 (-이에요 / -예요) | To be (identity / definition) | None (attaches directly to noun) | 저는 학생이에요. (I am a student.) |
| 아니다 (이/가 아니에요) | To not be (negating identity) | Noun + 이/가 | 저는 의사가 아니에요. (I am not a doctor.) |
| 있다 (이/가 있어요) | To exist / To have (location/possession) | Noun + 이/가 (at place에) | 지금 시간이 있어요. (I have time.) |
| 없다 (이/가 없어요) | To not exist / To not have | Noun + 이/가 (at place에) | 지갑에 돈이 없어요. (I have no money.) |
Crucial rule: 이에요/예요 connects directly to the noun with NO particle. In contrast, 아니에요, 있어요, and 없어요 all require the subject particle 이/가.
| Base verb | After consonant (받침 O) | After vowel (받침 X) | Past tense form |
|---|---|---|---|
| 이다 (to be) | 선생님이에요 | 의사예요 | 이었어요 / 였어요 |
| 아니다 (not to be) | 선생님이 아니에요 | 의사가 아니에요 | 아니었어요 |
| 있다 (to exist/have) | 우산이 있어요 | 시계가 있어요 | 있었어요 |
| 없다 (not to exist/have) | 우산이 없어요 | 시계가 없어요 | 없었어요 |
Pronunciation: 아니었어요 is pronounced [아니어써요], 있었어요 is pronounced [이써써요], 없었어요 is pronounced [업써써요].
Ask yourself what the sentence describes: If you are explaining WHAT a person or thing IS, use Noun + 이에요/예요 (or 이/가 아니에요 for negative). If you are describing WHERE an object is located or WHAT someone OWNS/HAS, use Item + 이/가 (장소에) 있어요/없어요. Remember: never say '안 이에요' (use 아니에요) and never say '안 있어요' (use 없어요).

- Pay attention to particles: 이에요/예요 attaches directly without a particle; 아니에요 and 있어요/없어요 always require 이/가.
