Initial ㅇ has no sound and acts as a placeholder for vowels (아이 = a-i). At the end of a syllable, ㅇ makes the 'ng' sound (강 = gang).

Vertical vowels (ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅣ, ㅑ, ㅕ) go to the right of the consonant (가, 너). Horizontal vowels (ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅡ, ㅛ, ㅠ) go under the consonant (고, 누).
Every Korean syllable block has at least one consonant and one vowel: Initial consonant + Vowel (e.g., ㄱ + ㅏ = 가, ㅇ + ㅗ = 오). Many blocks add a final consonant (받침) at the bottom: Initial + Vowel + Final (e.g., ㄱ + ㅏ + ㄴ = 간, ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅂ = 밥).
